Our Services

WRAPAROUND SUPPORT

After guests are housed in a safe environment, we connect them with on-site support services to help those facing addiction, mental health issues, food insecurity, and transportation barriers.

Mental Health
& Addiction Services

Guests are connected with an on-site psychiatrist who diagnoses and treats various mental health conditions, including substance use disorders.

On-site Peer Support Professionals as well as our community mental health partner, Oaklawn, lead guests in conversations about addiction recovery and offer additional mental health support.

Street Medicine Clinic

The Street Medicine Clinic was formed in partnership with Beacon Health System to increase access and quality of healthcare, while decreasing overall healthcare costs. A team of resident physicians and a supervisor meets with guests on-site every other week.

Food Program

In partnership with Our Lady of the Road, staff prepare and deliver 120 meals each day to guests. An on-site food pantry is also available to guests daily

Transportation

Staff provide guests with bus passes and daily transportation for medical needs, addiction treatment and legal appointments.

“Our team is so excited to continue our collaboration with the New Day Intake Center ensuring that every person who comes to them is housed and treated with compassion, love, respect and dignity while they are at one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.”

— Steve Camilleri, Executive Director, Center for the Homeless

Temporary Housing

We provide a safe place to stay for guests who may be experiencing addiction and/or mental health challenges. At Motels4Now, guests share a double-occupancy room with a bathroom. The New Day Intake Center will retain this model of double rooms with shared bathroom facilities.

National studies show that our housing-first approach is the most successful way to end chronic homelessness in our communities. With the security of a locking door, safe storage for belongings, hygiene facilities, and a fixed address, our guests can regain enough stability to seek longer-term solutions.

Food

Food insecurity is one of the most difficult challenges unhoused people face; they often dedicate their entire mental and physical energy for the day to searching for their next meals.

  • At Motels4Now, in partnership with Hope Ministries, we serve ~200 meals per day for our guests (lunch and dinner). We also provide snacks, breakfast items, coffee, and pantry items from the Food Bank of Northern Indiana and Cultivate Food Rescue.

  • New Day Intake Center will have a dedicated commercial kitchen so that we can provide guests three healthy meals a day. Our new site will also be in walkable proximity to several grocery stores so that guests may shop for their own food if desired.

Medical Support

Homelessness often both stems from and creates major health challenges. Some people cannot work because of illness (whether mental or physical), which can lead to homelessness. But being unhoused for any reason can contribute to a range of health issues due to exposure to the elements as well as lack of good nutrition and hygeine options. Critically, unhoused people often don’t have the stability to create ongoing relationships with health providers, or the means to consistently acquire and take medications.

Motels4Now has several partnerships which enable guests to address medical needs, sometimes for the first time in decades.

  • Oaklawn recovery coaches work on-site and partner with guests to establish relationships with mental health and addiction recovery service providers.

  • We offer rides to medical appointments and assistance picking up and dispensing prescriptions for some guests.

  • Physicians from Memorial Hospital visit the site for a street medicine clinic twice a month and are able to refer guests to follow-up appointments with primary care providers and specialists.

  • We retain a psychiatrist on-staff, providing 10 hours of guest consultations monthly, assisting guests in receiving accurate diagnosis and appropriate medication to treat psychiatric conditions.

Permanent Housing

Our Housing Team works diligently to secure documents and partners with guests to prepare for their transition to longer term, sustainable housing options.

Our goal is to help every guest transition to permanent housing. Many of our guests find their own next steps, whether that is renting an apartment, reuniting with family, or moving to inpatient rehab. For hundreds of others, our Housing Team works to:

  • Secure identity documents, rental histories, etc.

  • Guide qualified guests through applications for financial support programs such as vouchers, social security, veterans’ benefits, etc.

  • Support qualified guests’ applications for permanent supportive housing or senior housing

  • Partner with landlords around South Bend to find suitable apartments for our guests in transition

  • Accompany guests through the process of signing a lease, the move-in process, and following up

  • Provide essential furniture and housewares

  • Accompany guests through the first months of housing by visiting them and assisting as needed ranging from landlord and neighbor relations to utility payments, just to name a few

The Impact.
